New freedom for light: Funivia from Artemide

Funivia pushes boundaries: there's a reason its name means "cable car" in Italian. Artemide's flexible lighting network follows its own path and cannot be stopped by heights, angles and gradients. Free and inclusive, it can constantly evolve through the interplay of individual elements - and thus escapes the rigidity of standard lighting systems.

Complex geometries

Funivia is based on a spirit of discovery that opens upnew potential for the freedom of light. Starting with a single power point, the system designed by Carlotta de Bevilacqua creates a network of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines that unfold three-dimensionally in a room. Thanks to the flexible installation of cables and lighting modules that can be moved as needed, light is directed exactly where it is needed. This makes Funivia particularly suitable for rooms that are particularly difficult to light. Architecture with high ceilings, bay windows and galleries, for example, or with sharp angles and sloping roofs. Endless grids can now be woven in a wide variety of geometric configurations to bypass obstacles or integrate them in a targeted manner. For example, Funivia can glide freely through a space in a horizontal zigzag line and then penetrate vertically to higher areas of the space. In addition, several Funivia systems can be merged using connecting elements. This creates a unique, complex dialogue between the lighting elements and their immediate architectural surroundings.

A universal, sustainable lighting language

The cable serves as a channel for energy distribution, and also has a load-bearing function: individual luminaires are mechanically attached to it using bridge modules. Current is drawn through pins that make contact with the corresponding poles. This design principle makes Funivia an open integration system: existing Artemide products can be easily integrated. Depending on the individual design, the result is a kind of Esperanto of light. Universal bridge modules also become nodes in an intangible digital network. Each luminaire can be individually controlled and energy-efficiently managed via the Artemide app. The integration of existing lighting components also ensures that there is no need to manufacture new, additional products, which contributes to environmental protection.

Dynamic lighting structures for outdoor applications

Features such as these make the outdoor version of the system a convincing lighting solution. The flexibility of the cable allows for a wide range of dynamic installations created without much effort. This allows light to reach areas previously thought inaccessible. With the Artemide app, smart lighting concepts can be realized that harmoniously adapt to the natural rhythms of the environment. Funivia Outdoor is also compatible with existing product lines. This demonstrates the continuous creative exchange between architects and designers working with Artemide.
